I premi sono stati istituiti dal Governo Norvegese nell'anno 2002 per festeggiare il 200º anniversario della nascita di Niels Henrik Abel, il massimo matematico norvegese. Viene assegnato ogni anno in base alla scelta dei membri della "The Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters".

La lista è stata tratta dal sito ufficiale dell'Abel Prize, al quale rimando per le ricerche per sezione, per anno o per vincitore; ringrazio il webmaster del sito per la gentile concessione.
