I premi sono stati istituiti dal Governo Norvegese nell'anno 2002 per festeggiare il 200º anniversario della nascita di Niels Henrik Abel, il massimo matematico norvegese. Viene assegnato ogni anno in base alla scelta dei membri della "The Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters".
